Description
Description
The Gaggia Classic earned its reputation in 1991.
Now featuring innovation that built on it in 2024.
The Gaggia Classic is one of the most respected domestic espresso machines ever produced — a machine with a genuine 30-year cult following among home baristas, tinkerers, and espresso purists worldwide. The E24 is its most capable iteration: same all-metal, Italian-built chassis, now with an enlarged lead-free brass boiler delivering measurably better temperature stability and steam performance. Available from All Appliances — Melbourne's authorised Gaggia stockist and on-site repair centre since 1984.
Unlike appliances that change beyond recognition, the E24 is immediately identifiable as a Gaggia Classic. Incremental improvements, not namesake facelifts.

Brass Boiler — The Upgrade That Actually Changes Performance
The E24's defining change over its predecessor is the switch from aluminium to an enlarged lead-free brass boiler — 25% greater internal capacity and significantly more thermal mass. Independent testing has recorded extraction temperature variance of just 3°F across a 30-second shot, approaching consistency typically found in dual-boiler machines costing three to four times as much. Real-world impact: more stable shots, stronger steam, and the ability to make consecutive milk drinks with less recovery time. If you're comparing E24 to the previous Evo Pro, this is the reason to choose the E24.
58mm Commercial Portafilter — The Professional Standard
The 58mm group head is used by La Marzocco, Synesso, and virtually every commercial machine on the market. This means your technique, your tamper, and your aftermarket baskets are fully transferable — and the Gaggia's upgrade path is wide open. Precision baskets, naked portafilters, and puck screens all fit directly. Most machines at this price point use smaller, proprietary group heads that limit what you can do with the machine long-term.
3-Way Solenoid Valve — The Detail Cheaper Machines Skip
After every shot the solenoid depressurises the group head, drawing moisture from the puck and leaving it dry and compact. You knock out a clean disc rather than wet grounds — your portafilter is ready to reload immediately, your bench stays clean, and the group head is protected from residual pressure. Machines without this valve, typically anything below this price tier, leave a wet, messy puck every time. It's a small engineering detail that defines the daily experience of using the machine.
Professional Steam Wand — Actual Microfoam, Not Just Froth
The two-hole steam tip produces genuine microfoam — the fine, silky texture required for latte art and a proper flat white. This is distinct from entry-level machines with panarello wands, which produce coarser froth that sits on top of the drink rather than integrating with the espresso. There is a learning curve to using the wand correctly. Once your technique is right, the results are café-quality and repeatable.
All-Metal Construction — Built for Decades
The Gaggia Classic uses a one-piece 17-gauge stainless steel frame with brass internals wherever thermal performance demands it. There is minimal plastic in any component that matters. This isn't cosmetic — it's why Gaggia Classics from the 1990s are still being used and serviced today, and why a thriving secondhand market exists for these machines. At this price point, most alternatives are predominantly plastic and largely unrepairable. The E24 is neither.
The machine you can own for 20 years — if you have the right support behind it.
The Gaggia Classic has one of the strongest repairability and longevity records of any home espresso machine. Parts are widely available, the internal layout is accessible, and the technical community around this machine is well established. All Appliances has been repairing espresso machines in Melbourne since 1984. We stock Gaggia spare parts in-house and service the Classic on-site at our Fairfield showroom. Whether it's a routine descale, a boiler replacement, or a pump five years from now — we can fix it rather than you replacing it.
Is the Gaggia Classic E24 suitable for beginners?
Yes, with a realistic expectation. The included pressurised basket produces a decent shot even when grind and tamp aren't perfectly dialled in — making it forgiving for those starting out. That said, this is a manual machine. It rewards attention and improves noticeably as your technique develops. Most owners find it approachable from day one and genuinely capable as they progress. The upgrade path — precision baskets, naked portafilter — grows with you.
What grinder do I need with the Gaggia Classic E24?
A burr grinder capable of a consistent, fine espresso grind is essential. Blade grinders will not produce repeatable results. The 58mm portafilter is the professional standard and pairs well with most quality home grinders. We stock compatible grinders in-store — Contact us for a pairing recommendation based on your budget.
How does the E24 differ from the Gaggia Classic Evo?
The E24's brass boiler is the key change — 25% larger internal capacity and significantly better thermal mass than the Evo's aluminium boiler. Testing shows 47% better thermal stability and stronger steam performance. The bodywork also gains a visible water level window and revised drip tray. The Evo Pro is still a capable machine, but if you're buying new, the E24 is the version to choose.
Does it come with an Australian warranty?
Yes. The Gaggia Classic E24 purchased from All Appliances includes an Australian Return to Base warranty. As an authorised service centre with on-site repair capability in Fairfield, VIC, warranty work and post-warranty servicing is handled in-house — faster turnaround than any arrangement that requires interstate shipping.
Can it use ESE pods?
Yes. The included pressurised basket accepts ESE (Easy Serving Espresso) pods as well as pre-ground coffee. The single and double baskets are for ground coffee only and are what most users progress to as their technique develops.
Is it worth modifying?
The Gaggia Classic has one of the most active modification communities of any home espresso machine — PID temperature controllers, OPV spring adjustments, and naked portafilters are the most common. None are necessary to make excellent espresso from the E24, but the platform fully supports them. Notably, the E24's brass boiler already addresses the temperature stability that drove most Classic modifications historically, making it a more capable machine straight out of the box than any previous version. Please note unauthorised repair work or modification may affect your warranty.
